Touch over-responsivity

What you might notice:

  • Over-responding to some touch, particularly light touch
  • Dislikes brushing teeth, brushing hair
  • Does not like getting hands messy.

What might help

  • Use deep pressure rather than light touch
  • Try placing a heavy item on your lap when it is difficult to avoid light touch, such as when having your hair cut
  • Use massage/deep pressure before and after activities that involve light touch.

Touch under-responsivity

  • May not notice changes in the temperature
  • Self-harm (bite, scratch, pull out own hair etc.)
  • Not be aware of having dirty hands and face
  • May not notice pain as easily.

What might help

  • Increase different tactile opportunities, such as play dough, using hands for baking, bare foot walking (when safe to do so)
  • Try fidgets when needing to focus. You could try a foot fidget attached to your chair
  • Use a mirror to check face is clean after eating
  • Use a mirror to check clothes on body after dressing.
