Talking about your autism diagnosis

Sharing that you are autistic is a personal choice.  You may choose to share your diagnosis with some people and not with others.

It may be helpful to think about the pros and cons of sharing your diagnosis.

For example, sharing your diagnosis with your school, college or employer could help them to better understand you and any support you may need.

You could also identify any worries or concerns about sharing your diagnosis.

Talking to your child about being autistic

The Autism Diagnostic Youth Service for Suffolk (ADYSS), often meet with young people following their assessment to share their understanding of the young person’s needs.

Some young people prefer that we share this information with the parent/ carer who can talk with them about this when the time feels right.

In these circumstances the way information is shared will be a personal choice and vary from family to family. As parents/carers you will know your young person best and know how you have shared information in the past, what has worked well and what has been more difficult.
