Rollesby Ward

  • Rollesby Ward, based at Hellesdon Hospital in Norwich, is a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU). Rollesby Ward offers assessment and treatment for people detained under the Mental Health Act. This may mean that we cannot manage them in a safe way on an open ward.

What this service offers

The length of stay on Rollesby Ward can vary from a few days to a couple of weeks. Our team on Rollesby Ward all work with inpatients to ensure they meet their needs. They also work to ensure lengths of stay are as short as possible.

Inpatients on Rollesby Ward receive a review every week. This can include family members, carers or advocates. Patient’s community nurses are also involved in care on the ward.

We treat the following conditions on Rollesby Ward:

  • Bipolar affective disorder
  • Increased levels of violence and aggression
  • Schizophrenia
  • Significant risk to others.

Access this service

Admissions requests to Rollesby Ward are usually made through an open acute ward. Usually because we cannot manage the patient in a safe way on an open ward.

Rollesby Ward also accepts requests for admission following a Mental Health Act assessment. This may take place in the community or through the 136 suite. The 136 suite is a place of safety for those who those detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act. 

Our team delivers an assessment for admissions from an open acute ward.

How this service support carers including friends and family

With our patient’s consent, we involve relatives and carers in care plans. We also invite them to attend weekly review meetings. We also involve them in the planning for when our patients return into the community.
