The crisis service may support young people who are: • experiencing an acute mental health crisis • at immediate or escalating risk of harm to themselves or others • requiring urgent assessment and risk management • requiring intensive short-term support to stabilise their mental health • requiring follow-up after Mental Health Act (1983 amended 2007) assessment • recently discharged from inpatient care and requiring crisis follow-up The service provides crisis assessment and brief intervention (with intensive home treatment where clinically indicated being added as the service expands). Referral to the crisis service may not be appropriate where: • another specialist pathway is required (e.g. Eating Disorder crisis or Learning Disability services) • the primary need relates to social care, safeguarding or family circumstances • the young person can be safely supported by existing services In these circumstances, the 111 mental health clinician will advise on the most appropriate pathway.
