NSFT Recovery College launches ‘Steps for Support’ walking groups to boost mental wellbeing
Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s (NSFT) Recovery College is launching a new programme of community walking groups to support mental health and wellbeing across the region.
‘Steps for Support’ offers free, inclusive walks designed to help people improve both their mental and physical health in a relaxed and supportive environment. The groups provide a safe, low-pressure opportunity to connect with others, where participants can chat or simply be around people.
Ash Moorcroft, Manager of the Recovery College, said: “Steps for Support is about creating a welcoming, supportive space where people can come together and take small, positive steps towards better mental health. You don’t have to talk - just being around others can make a real difference.
“Walking together can help reduce loneliness, build confidence and give people a positive reason to get outdoors and explore their local community. Being in nature is also proven to reduce stress levels and help people feel calmer and more grounded.”
Experienced mental health practitioners will be on hand during the walks to offer support and advice. The sessions are open to everyone, whether you are currently struggling with your mental health and would like to connect with others in a similar situation, or if you feel able to support others by being a listening ear.
Cath Byford, Chief Patient Experience Officer and Deputy Chief Executive at NSFT, said: “We know that small, simple steps can make a big difference to people’s mental wellbeing. ‘Steps for Support’ is a fantastic example of how we can bring communities together in a safe and inclusive way, helping people feel less alone while gently improving both their physical and mental health. I’m proud to see our Recovery College leading this initiative, creating opportunities for connection, confidence and recovery across Norfolk and Suffolk.”
The first walks will take place in Norwich and Ipswich, with plans to expand the programme across Norfolk and Suffolk.
