Balance (vestibular) over-responsivity

What you might notice:

  • Look unwell or clammy after a movement activity, or a sudden change in their mood
  • Prefer activities that do not involve movement / avoid movement activities
  • Dislike heights
  • Dislike travelling on escalators or lifts.

What might help

  • Prepare for the movement
  • Slow down movements
  • Offer a choice of movement activities, to encourage participation.

Important: Vestibular input is powerful and can affect the nervous system quickly. What's regulating for one person can be overwhelming for another. Be cautious.

What you might notice:

  • Not get dizzy when spun around
  • Difficult to distinguish between slow and fast movements or when they are changing direction
  • Seeking extra movement or may seem clumsy.

What might help

Frequent movement breaks.

Additional opportunities for activities like swinging, jumping or balancing.
