Managing change/routines
Dealing with change, whether big or little changes, can be difficult if you are autistic. Routines can help us predict what is going to happen and feel safe in our environment and activities.
Sometimes small changes such as moving between two activities or a change in your environment can be distressing. Other big events like holidays, celebrations, starting or changing school or moving house, can create change and stresses. This can cause anxiety.
Having time to prepare for change and / or using visual supports (e.g. countdown calendars, lists or looking at pictures of new places) can all be helpful. The National Autistic Society (NAS) have created some useful information about dealing with change.
