Laurel Ward in Lowestoft offers ongoing assessment and stabilisation of dementia care needs for people over 65 years in the Great Yarmouth and Waveney area. The team works closely with the individual and their family or carers to develop a person-centred care plan to meet the person's needs.

The referral criteria for Laurel Ward are a diagnosis of dementia and older age.
Laurel Ward only accepts transfers to the service from assessment wards in Norfolk.
Laurel Ward includes Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered General Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Assistant Practitioners and Clinical Support Workers. They all contribute to the individual’s health and wellbeing while in our unit.
Laurel Ward’s Consultant Psychiatrist will lead the person's care. The medical team will review the person regularly while they are with the ward. There is access to medical cover 24 hours a day. The ward has a visiting physiotherapist and has access to services within the local health economy.
What this service offers
The individual will benefit from a full range of activities to suit their needs. The Laurel Ward team will work closely with their family and carers to help them through their dementia journey.
The team works with the person and their family to help them find a suitable placement which will provide a home environment.
Laurel Ward is not an admission area. Our colleagues in Norfolk will offer an admission and assessment area. Once the Norfolk team has diagnosed the person’s health condition and their health is stable, consideration will be given to transfer them to their local area, Great Yarmouth and Waveney.

Car parking is available on site. On arrival please report to Main Reception to sign in. You will get an access code to visit the Ward.
How this service support carers including friends and family
We work with carers and families to gain information about your relative's care. We actively seek your input into their life story and try to work together to develop needs-based individualised care.
We invite families and carers to care review meetings and offer one-to-one meetings. We also have carer groups run on the ward.
We will work with family and friend to support your needs and help you get in touch with partner organisations who can give you practical support.
