New multi-million-pound mental health wards in Norwich have won New Build Project of the Year in the Healthcare Estates Awards 2025.

The new £55m Rivers Centre at Hellesdon Hospital, run by Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT), completed in January 2025 - providing new beds in a modern and purpose-built environment. The project was delivered by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine.

It consists of three new ward buildings that have been co-designed with patients to provide a bespoke and therapeutic setting while helping to reduce the use of out-of-area and independent sector placements in Norfolk and Suffolk.

It also featured on BBC's The One Show last month as presenter and singer Ian 'H' Watkins visited the wards' bespoke art project led by charity Hospital Rooms.

The Healthcare Estates Awards ceremony took place on Tuesday, 21 October at Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester where the state-of-the-art mental health facility was handed the prestigious award.

The accolade highlights the Rivers Centre as a project that embodies originality and innovation across the healthcare estates and engineering sector.

It was one of six projects shortlisted for the title which also included the highly commended Stroke Rehabilitation Unit at West Cumberland Hospital.

Jason Hollidge, Chief Finance Officer at NSFT, said: "This project is testament to what can be achieved when developers, clinical staff, corporate colleagues and people with lived experience work collaboratively towards a shared vision.

"It's fantastic to see The Rivers Centre as is it today - providing specialist, safe, and person-centred care for service users. I'm delighted that we've won this accolade, which recognises the hard work of many of our staff and service users alongside such worthy national projects."
