NSFT improving discharges with MADE

System partners have praised staff from across NSFT for the genuine care they showed to service users during a special multi-agency discharge event (MADE).
MADE saw the Trust join forces with system partners to spend three days focusing on patient flow and unblocking the barriers which impact the ability to discharge. It was organised in response to figures which showed there were 760 bed days lost to delayed transfers of care in May alone, while the average length of stay for NSFT adult acute beds was 70.5 days compared with a national average of 41.
MADE aimed to address this by helping NSFT make positive changes to improve processes while also enhancing the experiences inpatients have when using services.
Feedback from June's event showed that NSFT needs to improve record keeping and data, bed management processes, communication and the consistency of board rounds while also ensuring the best use is made of its resources.
In addition, the Trust will work with system partners to improve communication across teams and how it works with care homes, while housing issues for service users will also be an area for focus.
Anthony Deery, NSFT Chief Nurse, said: We would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to help make MADE a success. In particular, we were delighted with the feedback we received from system partners, who told us they could see our staff treat service users as citizens and show them genuine care and consideration of their holistic needs.
MADE gave us the opportunity to reset and review our discharge processes while identifying areas where longer-term action is needed. As well as helping ensure service users could be discharged safely, appropriately and in a timely way, it also helped us reduce length of stay and out of area placements while improving outcomes for our service users.
