Mental Wellbeing Support Team (HMP Norwich)

What this service offers

The team consists of Registered Mental Health Nurses, Learning Disability Nurses, a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist. They are are all experienced in providing secondary mental health care to prisoners, along with Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners and Cognitive Behavioural Therapists (CBT) who are experts in providing a Wellbeing (IAPT) service.  

All mental health services are provided in an integrated way. The team can provide interventions relevant to the needs of prisoners, including stepping care up and down as required.  

The aim is to work with custody staff to create a safe prison environment for all prisoners with mental health and related problems. The team strives to prevent suicides and self-harm and promote recovery from mental ill health. 
 

Conditions we treat in this service:  

  • Major mental illness   

  • Mild and severe depression   

  • Substance misuse related problems where there is a coexisting mental health difficulty  

  • Personality disorder   

  • Anxiety   

  • Support following self-harm or thoughts / actions relating to suicide

Access this service

Service users are residents of HMP Norwich and a member of prison staff would refer someone. People can refern themselves for the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies team.

How this service support carers including friends and family

Where appropriate, we take into account any information provided by family or carers. We can also advise on some aspects of the criminal justice system.  

The Prison service provides arrangements for safe custody. If family or friends have concerns about a loved one in custody they can contact the prison for support.  

Urgent help

Prison residents can seek urgent help from prison officers in their accommodation. They will then call for medical help as required.  

In the community:  

If you are a service user and are in crisis and need support urgently you can contact your service on the number which will have been provided.  

Call 111 and select the mental health option to speak to our 24 hour mental health crisis line.

If you are with someone who has attempted suicide, call 999 and stay with them until the ambulance arrives. 

If anyone is at serious risk of harm, call 999 and ask for the police. 

For non-life threatening medical situations, call NHS111 on 111.
