How a little consideration during fireworks season can make a big difference to veterans
As Bonfire Night approaches, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Trust (NSFT) are encouraging people to think about how fireworks may affect those living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Whilst for some of us fireworks are an important part of autumn celebrations, for veterans they can trigger memories of combat and their time in the armed forces.
Vicky Bailey, a Clinical Nurse Specialist from NSFT’s Veterans Integrated Service, says that whilst she knows fireworks are popular in celebrations this time of year, there are a few simple steps everyone can take to be supportive:
“I know that for many people fireworks are a traditional celebration and bring a lot of enjoyment; however, the sudden loud noises, flashes of light, and the smells, can trigger vivid and terrifying memories of war for veterans, leading to heightened anxiety, hypervigilance and panic.
“If you are planning a fireworks display at home, consider giving your neighbours advance warning, such as popping a note through their door advising that you will be setting off fireworks. That way, anyone who may be affected by the sight and sound of the display can plan ahead and put coping mechanisms into place.”
Vicky suggests veterans plan ahead or fireworks season by planning activities in advance, whether that means going to a professional display or staying at home in a controlled environment.
She said: “To cope, veterans can use noise-cancelling headphones, practice grounding techniques like focusing on their senses, use coping strategies like breathing exercises, and surround themselves with supportive friends and family, or seek professional help.
“If you do feel able to go to a fireworks display, have a plan to leave if you start to become distressed and schedule other healthy distractions such as exercising at home. Don’t forget to reassure yourself that fireworks season only lasts a short time, and it will soon be over.”
