Crochet group’s post box topper project raises awareness for NSFT’s Recovery College

Chantry Crochet Group, based in Ipswich, has created a vibrant post box topper for World Mental Health Day, and in support of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s (NSFT) Recovery College.

Sarah Hornby, who attends the crochet group, first heard about the Recovery College through her partner, Leigh, who had been referred to the service by his GP.

Leigh now volunteers with Recovery College, sharing his lived experience with others. He said: "Recovery College has been part of the foundation of my mental health recovery. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am now."

Inspired by the difference Recovery College had made to their lives, Sarah and Leigh introduced the crochet group to its work. What began as a World Mental Health Day project soon became a way of raising awareness for Recovery College too, with a QR code linking to the service displayed alongside the post box topper and a JustGiving page being set up.

Donna Wilby started the group following her own struggles with mental health. She explained: “Crochet saved my life. It keeps your mind and your hands busy at the same time, and many find it relaxing and therapeutic. Many of our members have also experienced mental health difficulties or loneliness, so the crochet itself comes second to us supporting each other.”

Donna added that everyone is welcome, regardless of ability: “The post box topper used beginner-friendly patterns so everyone could get involved in supporting a cause that meant something to us.”

Following news of the group's support, Recovery College colleagues visited a crochet session to share information about the courses and support available, with several members now planning to sign up for courses.

Donations will go towards supporting service users in future campaigns.

Recovery College Manager, Ash Moorcroft said: “It’s lovely to see the crochet group using their creativity to support others, brighten up their local area, and share an important message. The money they raise will help us provide activities and opportunities through Recovery College, bringing people together and supporting them with their mental health and recovery.”

Recovery College offers free educational courses for individuals aged 16-plus in Norfolk and Suffolk, for people experiencing mental health challenges, their supporters, and professionals. It is open to anyone and complements clinical support, allowing individuals to choose courses and learn at their own pace either in person or online.

The post box topper will be on display at Hawthorn Drive shopping parade, Chantry, Ipswich until the end of October.
