Health and Care Bill to retain rights of unpaid carers
Carers UK welcomed an amendment to the Health and Care Bill earlier this year which places a new duty on NHS hospital trusts in England to ensure that unpaid carers are involved as soon as feasible when plans for the patient’s discharge are being made.
The amendment covers all carers of adults needing care and support following hospital discharge, including health care support. This means that young carers looking after adults would also be covered.

Sharing ways of living well
The Trust co hosted the carers event, Sharing Ways of Living Well, on World Mental Health day at the Forum in Norwich.
It was formally opened by Peter Rowley, from Care for Carers, and Stuart Richardson, chief executive of NSFT.
Jill Curtis, Senior Carers Lead, said: “The event brings together many organisations across Norfolk and Suffolk that provide support for carers and families. It was a busy day and good to reconnect with people.”
The event, which takes place twice a year, once during Carers Week and once celebrating World Mental Health Day, attracts a good number of people.
Peter said: “It was good to catch up with services that have supported the event for many years but also great to see some new services. The event hosted more than 60 stalls, providing information for carers from all walks of life.”
The next event will take place in June 2023.

Your chance to get involved
The Trust project team is looking for individuals who support someone under our mental health services to help generate ideas which ensure that our way of working meets the needs of service users and their loved ones.
Bonnie Teague, Head of Research, said: “The need to transform our services through collaboration and innovation has never been greater, and it is important that new care approaches include the voice and views of our service users and their families.”
One or two people are needed to be part of the project team and others are needed to give feedback to the project through a survey, 1:1 meeting or small group workshops.
