SHIFA clinic (Supporting Holistic and Integrated Assessment for Forced Migrants)

  • These are specialist mental health clinics run monthly by Dr Yasir Hameed (Consultant Psychiatrist) and Dr Hannah Fox (General Practitioner) for patients in Norfolk. The team includes two assistant psychologists from the Research Department, Ms Izobel Clegg and Ms Eirini Charami Roupa. We offer a holistic and culturally-sensitive assessment using interpretation services when required and focus on educating the clients about their condition and how they can manage it. We receive referrals via the Single Point of Access from primary care professionals and other services within Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust to offer a comprehensive assessment considering these patients' complexity, cultural backgrounds and history of trauma. We aspire to work closely with other specialist mental health teams in Norfolk to support our patients by making onward referrals to them for further input and offering advice regarding managing their patients from asylum seekers and refugees backgrounds. We also work closely with other organisations, such as the People from Abroad Team (Norfolk County Council), police, charity organisations and Wellbeing Services. Unfortunately, we don't accept self-referrals, and this service is for patients based in Norfolk only (not in Suffolk). We are working closely with colleagues in Suffolk to start a similar pathway. We accept referrals for all age groups.
