ASD and mental health

Young Minds (2021) report that mental health issues are more common in people with a diagnosis of autism. One study suggests that as many as 7 out of 10 people with autism also have a condition such as anxiety, depression, OCD or ADHD.

It is important that autistic people, like everyone, look after their general wellbeing to support their mental health. There can be additional challenges with this because of having autism, and sometimes a creative approach is required when thinking about how the persons mental health needs can be met. Poor mental health should not just be accepted as being ‘part of being autistic’ and support is available for those who need it.

Other sources of support

Mental health apps can be helpful for people seeking to manage their mental health and access support when needed. Many people find it easier to engage with help and support in this way as it reduces the pressure of having to communicate verbally.

Here are some specific apps, for autistic people, available for managing stress, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed.

Please note that some apps may be free and some you have to pay for.  In-app purchasing may also be available.

  • Molehill Mountain is designed to help autistic people understand more about their anxiety. The app is based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) approaches which have been adapted for people with autism.
  • Brain in Hand is a digital support system linked to human support. It is designed to help you navigate day-to-day difficulties and solve problems for yourself. This includes a diary system, notes and reminders of daily tasks, individual coping strategies and systems to monitor anxiety levels and access support. This app has been approved by the National Autistic Society.
