Suffolk Coastal Youth

 What help do you offer?

​We are a secondary mental health service offering support to people aged 14 to 25 in Suffolk.

This service will engage with clients, individually and within families, inclusively across cultures and contexts. Staff will conduct specialist assessments and plan packages of care.


We offer a full comprehensive assessment that looks at the holistic needs of the individual and provide:

  • Anxiety management,
  • Behaviour activation,
  • Cognitive behavioural therapy,
  • Psychological interventions,
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming therapy,
  • CAT therapy,
  • Understanding and management of trauma,
  • Family therapy,
  • ‘Back on track’ interventions such as ‘sleep management’ and ‘living with emotions’,
  • Assessment of daily living skills and neurological functioning,
  • Practical support with social care needs, housing and benefits,
  • Support work for ‘exposure’ work and to meet practical needs.


We obtain information from all sources involved in the individuals care to aid our assessment and help plan out interventions.


We are a team of highly skilled practitioners who work alongside policies and procedures as well as evidence based practice.


We promote recovery and work at all times with values and anti-discriminatory practice. 


 How do I get help from your service?

​Referral to our service is via the Emotional Wellbeing Hub online. Also via the Emotional Wellbeing Gateway or via phone on 03456002090. Your GP or any professional can make this referral but you can also self-refer.


 What hours is your service available?

​9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.


 What can I expect from you?

Initially we will contact you to discuss the referral, to make sure it is what you are seeking, to explain what we do and to gather any new information.

An assessment will then be arranged, usually face to face and we will gather further information and talk with the young person and family members.

We will then either signpost you to a more appropriate service if this is agreed, or we will develop a care plan with you in collaboration, with agreed set goals. You have an arranged schedule of contact.

For some people this is intensive, involving face-to-face or telephone contact several times a week. For others this involves a monitoring service with weekly or monthly contact.

Some contact occurs individually in a clinic, at your home or in the community. At other times we deliver evidence-based interventions in groups.

If you are receiving a care package under the Care Programme Approach, you have your care coordinator as your primary link in the team, but you may also talk to other clinicians and administrators as part of your care plan.

You will know how to get hold of your care coordinator if you need to, including during times of urgency.

 What conditions do you treat?

​Young people present to service with emotional difficulties that may be related to systemic factors, such as family systems, school, peer group, societal factors and these issues may go on and impact on their mental health in a more significant way.

Infrequently they may go on to present with symptoms indicative of anxiety and depression.

Rarely young people may present with more serious mental illness such as Bipolar Disorder or with psychotic symptoms.


 What support do you offer carers including friends and family?

​Carers and family and friends will be invited to join the assessment process, particularly important if a child is under 18. On most occasions the child agrees with this, but on the occasions they do not we will take this into account and offer some compromise.


In situations when the young person is over 18 we do need their consent for carers/ family input, unless risk is considered a significant factor. This may then be overruled.


Family therapy is a key treatment in the youth pathway. We have access to carers leads and we can offer full carers assessments and access to the carers budget for short breaks.

We include your friends and family in care planning and perform carer assessments to reflect their role as significant contributors to the care plan.

We encourage your nearest relatives and next of kin to participate in decisions made with you about your care, and invite them to formal reviews as well as supporting the interventions described as part of the Care Programme Approach.
