Thank you for your interest in Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) and our Non-Executive Director position.

We provide mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services across Norfolk and Suffolk. At the Trust, we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

Service users and carers are at the centre of all aspects of our work and are vital in helping shape and support our services. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems, or who need to improve their wellbeing, to live a fulfilling life.

From your own background reading, you will see that in October 2016, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published its inspection report into our services and our Trust’s overall rating has positively moved to ‘Requires Improvement’ from Unsatisfactory.

The CQC commented that our Trust had made ‘…significant progress…’ since our last inspection, that ‘…staff morale has significantly improved…’ and staff appeared ‘…happy in their roles and proud of the service they worked in…’.  

Continuing to develop a culture in which quality, safety and service user and carer experience is our number one priority. In the last three years we have improved a number of key areas, including the quality of reporting to our Board of Directors and strengthened and reshaped the supporting committee structures. We have invested in increasing the number of front line staff and improving the physical environment for our service users and carers.

We are seeking the appointment of a Non-Executive Director who understands the challenges ahead, but who also recognises that it will be a rewarding and worthwhile journey, working as part of an ambitious Board team to create a successful, high performing and sustainable future for our Trust.

The successful candidate will need to build upon the changes we have already made, be able to probe and challenge others constructively and bring the benefit of their experience (regardless of sector or specialism) to make an effective contribution to the complex and changing environment in which we work. 

Given recent changes amongst our Non-Executive Directors we are especially interested in candidates with experience in strategic finance.

I would not want to downplay the significant challenges we face as an organisation but we have already made significant progress and we have ambitious plans to address the remaining challenges we face.

I am proud to chair a Trust that is ambitious for its service users, carers and staff and which is so clearly dedicated to working with them to provide safe, compassionate and recovery focused care.
