Search is on for more diverse NHS board membership

​The NHS Foundation Trust that provides mental health services across Norfolk and Suffolk is looking to broaden the diversity of its Board of Directors.

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust has more than 4,000 staff, a turnover of £230 million, and looks after more than 40,000 patients a year.

There is a vacancy coming up on the Board of Directors because non-executive director Barry Capon is retiring after 12 years on the board.

Chair Gary Page said: “Our communities are growing more diverse and we want to make sure our Board is more of the people we serve. We’re really keen to improve the diversity of our Board and we’d very much welcome applications from all sections of the community we serve.

"We’re looking for people with a real passion for mental wellbeing, for public service, and who have the governance and financial experience to help balance the strategic priorities of a complex £230 million organisation.

"We are particularly keen to receive applications from all sections of the community regardless of race, religion, disability, gender, marital status, sexual orientation or age.”

Over the past decade, the diversity of communities across Suffolk and Norfolk has changed. In Suffolk the percentage of people from ethnic minority communities has grown from 2.8 per cent in 2001 to 4.8 per cent in 2011. In Norfolk, the growth has been from 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent over the same period.

Applicants must live in Suffolk or Norfolk and essential expertise for a non-executive director includes:
• Ability to probe and challenge constructively
• Understanding of governance and performance management at a senior level.
• A clear understanding of operating in a changing commercial and competitive environment
• Experience of improving quality of services (public or private sector)
• Effective in a Board-level role

Non-executive directors earn £11,000 p.a. for a minimum of four days a month.
